When Winona went back to Winona, she discovered the local small businesses that comprise the town’s character and power the community. Businesses like these are essential to their neighborhoods, whether in small towns or big cities—they reflect the creative energy of an area and build meaningful connections between citizens.
To celebrate the local businesses that provide valuable cultural and practical touchstones for hometowns of all sizes, we’re kicking off a series on “Local Love.” This week we’re featuring Golden Diner, an Asian diner tucked underneath the Manhattan Bridge, serving classic NYC diner dishes that are locally sourced and influenced by the neighborhood—Chinatown.
Squarespace: Where are you located?
Golden Diner: Chinatown, Two Bridges
SQSP: How did you choose that location?
GD: I live and worked in the neighborhood for many years. I felt the neighborhood needed a solid diner that was accessible and offered quality product.
SQSP: Where is your hometown? Has your hometown influenced your business in any way?
GD: I was born and raised in Queens, NY. Spending a lot of time at diners in Queens helped shape the design, vibe and menu items for Golden Diner.
SQSP: What role does your digital presence play in engaging with your local community?
GD: Huge amounts. We're able to keep in touch with regulars and communicate with our digital presence. We can tell an audience that we're hiring, throwing an event, closed for a private party, etc. It's crucial to have a digital presence!
