Your logo often makes your brand’s first impression on potential customers, clients, or collaborators. It is a memorable point of identification and a way for you to stand out among competitors.

A carefully crafted logo can also help you avoid getting bogged down in design decisions later on, when you build out your online presence. How a logo appears in the context of website design can lead to a more positive, memorable, and enhanced user experience.

Logo fundamentals

Every brand logo should be clear, digestible, and memorable. Some questions to consider when designing the logo:

  • Does the design embody and accurately represent your brand identity?

  • Is it functional for all the ways you plan to use it?

  • Does it stand out amongst other brands?

Logo placement

Your logo will be a prominent element of your website design. If your site’s homepage includes key messages, featured products, or other information, place the logo in the upper left corner (as the eyes read from left to right). Another option is to simply place it front and center and invite your site visitors to explore your site sections via navigation or a single call to action. If you’re feeling stuck, check out some of your favorite brand sites for visual inspiration. Are their logos a consistent presence integrated across their site design or the primary striking visual? Make note of how their logos appear. Draw inspiration from these layouts and assess if it’s feasible for your brand website.

The header and footer that appear across your site pages also offer opportunities for brand consistency. Along with a logo in one or both places, this real estate is commonly used to highlight site navigation, social media icons (that directly open to those brand accounts) as well as a main source for contact.

Your logo should appear on every page of your site and be prominent on pages that include calls to action, like contact forms and checkout pages.

Don’t forget to customize the favicon (the icon that appears in a browser tab next to the site title). In constructing the brand website, it’s imperative to stay consistent throughout all facets, and the customization of the favicon is a simple but often overlooked opportunity. It builds brand consistency as well as making it easy for your audience to find their page when they have many tabs open.

Logos in your social media presence

Social presence is key in building your brand and expanding your audience. It’s important to consider what your logo will look like on the platforms you choose to share your brand on. Across platforms, profile images, sizes, and shapes vary. You want to ensure that your logo is clear and easily recognizable in every context. No section of the logo should be cut off or limited to the space of predetermined profile shapes.

Size and clarity are two key components to keep in mind when designing and utilizing the logo on social platforms. It is expected that the profile image will be repeatedly used in various parts of the app, differing in sizes. The logo should be as easily recognizable and clear (not pixelated) regardless of miniscule or blown up sizing.
